' I - - Higginbotham Trial Not Halted by Fourth LAKE CITT, Fla., July 4.—Although a legal holiday, activities were not ceased here today In the trial of Thomas Walter Higginbotham, charg ed with the murder of Martin Tabert of North Dakota. The defense was to produce further character witnesses, and indications today, were that the defense might be able to close on Thursday night. The charaoter witnesses were expected to take UP most of the trial today and tomorrow. Fifty, or more, remain to. be heard. A near fight enlivened the proceed ings yesterday when counsel for state and defense mixed personalities over a matter of law. James B. Kelley, state’s attorney, Incensed over a re mark by, .Leonidas Wade, of counsel for defense, made a dash at the latter, but was twice prevented from striking blows by other attorneys and court I attaohes. The defense began Its pre sentation of character witnesses yes | terday. Higginbotham, a former whipping boss In the private convict camp where Tabert is alleged to have met death ! as the result of a severe beating, testi fied that he had given Tabert ten lashes, with a strap which weighed one pound and 11 ounces. Last Month Was Exceptionally Dry Records of Weather Bureau Give - Interesting Figures Relative to Conditions. The month of June was dry, meteor ologieally speaking. The local weather bureau issued a report yesterday show ing that, with two exceptions, the last month was the dryest June alnce the > establishment of the local station in 1871. The precipitation was 1.8 inches. The drvest June on record was in 1914, when the precipitation was but 1.18 Inches. The wettest J'une, that of 1878, boasted a rainfall of 12.44 Inches. The mean^ernperature for last month was 0.1 below normal, being just 76.7 degrees. The temperature varied from 93 on the 28th to 61 on the 16th. Wil mington had more sunshine than clouds last month. Out of a possible 431.3 hours, 349.2 were sunshiny ones.
